Smart bulbs, light fixtures and switches are starting to enter the market. A few of these seen together hint at the beginnings of smart, ambient devices:
Home Automation Supplier: Insteon just introduced the INSTEON LED bulb - a lightbulb that has the company's control platform built right in, allowing you to control the bulb from one of their products or through their smarthub gateway with an iPhone Android phone and their free app. Reviews seem positive.
The team at T&B Ideas is taking this idea a step further. They are planning to offer a lamp that is WiF/Bluetooth-enabled. Their lamp also features sound control (clap on, clap off).
A former Microsoft engineer is looking to the switch as his platform, rather than the lamp or bulb. The Luminode by Think Automatic replaces existing wall switches with intelligent switches - they are directly addressable, communicate wirelessly, will build their own mesh networks to make set up easy, are fully programmable, report on energy used, usage events, and they are all supported with open access to control them with your own software or with theirs.
Each of the devices highlight here - the INSTEON LED bulb, the T&B lamp and the Luminode - was presented in order of increasing intelligence capability, and of increasing embodiment of the potential that Internet of Things products can and will have. The INSTEON is at the end of the day just a smart light bulb, the T&B lamp, an interactive and connected product, but the Luminode is a platform for innovation that has the potential to enable a world of opportunity on its own... and a great example of what will emerge from the Internet of Things.
